Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon
Main Street to Churchill Downs and back through Old Louisville to the Waterfront.
About the race
The Kentucky Derby Festival miniMarathon starts on Main Street by Louisville Slugger Field and heads through downtown Louisville. From there it runs south through the historic Old Louisville neighborhood to Churchill Downs, where runners pass through the home of the Kentucky Derby, then turns back north to finish at Preston and Witherspoon Streets, just outside the Waterfront.
The race goes back to 1974, when only two runners were guaranteed (local runner Phil Fowler and Mayor Harvey Sloane) and organizers ordered just 150 race numbers. The event now draws more than 10,000 entrants each April as part of the Derby Festival. Since 2011 the course has been a loop that starts and finishes within a few blocks, with the trip through Churchill Downs at its far end.
This poster traces the miniMarathon route on a street map of Louisville, with the Ohio River across the top and the race date in the upper right corner. It comes in Daylight, Pegasus Blue and Indigo. Each one is designed by hand after you order, with the runner's name and finish time added, plus a bib number if you'd like one.
