JFK 50 Mile
Boonsboro to Williamsport: South Mountain, the Appalachian Trail and 26 miles of C&O Canal.
About the race
The JFK 50 Mile is a point-to-point ultramarathon in Washington County, Maryland. It starts at 6:30 a.m. in downtown Boonsboro and climbs out of town on pavement, gaining 1,172 feet in the first 5.5 miles before joining the Appalachian Trail at mile 2.5. The next ten miles are rocky singletrack along the ridge, with aid at Gathland Gap, ending in a steep descent of about 1,000 feet down the Weverton Cliffs switchbacks to the Potomac River.
At mile 15.5 the course drops onto the C&O Canal towpath for 26.3 flat miles beside the river, past Harpers Ferry and Shepherdstown and the Antietam Aqueduct. It leaves the towpath at Dam #4 and finishes on 8.4 miles of rolling country roads through Downsville and into Williamsport, where the finish is at Springfield Middle School. The time limit is 13 hours.
The race has started in Boonsboro since it began in 1963, and the 2010 race was the 48th edition.
