Clarence DeMar Marathon
From Gilsum past Surry Mountain Dam to the Keene State finish line on Appian Way.
About the race
The Clarence DeMar Marathon starts at 7 a.m. in Gilsum, New Hampshire, and runs through the countryside toward Keene in early fall. It passes Surry Mountain Dam, then follows the road past Bretwood Golf Course into the city. The first half is gently rolling, a long climb comes around mile 15, and shorter, steeper climbs near miles 22 and 24 take runners through Greenlawn and Woodland cemeteries. Overall the course drops from start to finish.
The finish is on Appian Way at Keene State College, close to where Clarence DeMar once coached the college's cross-country and track runners. DeMar, who taught in Keene, won the Boston Marathon seven times, and the race has been held in his honor since 1978. The course is USATF-certified and a Boston qualifier.
Our poster traces the point-to-point route in orange on a black map of the Keene area, with Surry Mountain Lake in blue. The race date runs down the top left, and the title, distance and Keene, New Hampshire sit at the bottom left. Each poster is designed by hand after you order, with the runner's name and finish time added above the distance.
