About the race

The Boston Marathon is a point-to-point course that starts in Hopkinton and runs east on Route 135 through Ashland, Framingham and Natick to Wellesley, where it joins Route 16. It climbs through the Newton hills to Heartbreak Hill between miles 20 and 21, then follows Commonwealth Avenue to Cleveland Circle and Beacon Street through Brookline into Kenmore Square. A right on Hereford Street and a left on Boylston Street bring runners to the finish near Copley Square.

First run in 1897, Boston calls itself the world's oldest annual marathon, and it is held on Patriots' Day, the third Monday in April. The start moved west to Hopkinton in 1924, when the course was lengthened to the Olympic distance. A Boston Globe reporter named Heartbreak Hill in 1936, and the scream tunnel at Wellesley College is one of the best-known places to watch.

There are two designs. Navy & Yellow is a landscape print that draws the route as a single white line across a navy field, with each town labeled, a red heart over Heartbreak Hill, a large 26.2 in the corner and a yellow BOSTON headline. Orange & Black is a portrait print that traces the course across a dark street map from Hopkinton to Boston. Both are designed by hand after you order, with the runner's name and finish time added, plus a bib number if you'd like one.
