Big Sur International Marathon
Highway 1 from Big Sur to Carmel, over Hurricane Point and across Bixby Bridge.
About the race
The Big Sur International Marathon runs north on California State Route 1 from the Big Sur coast to Carmel. The course crosses Bixby Creek Bridge at about the halfway point, and the climb to Hurricane Point, 560 feet at its summit between miles 10 and 12, comes before it. The road is closed to traffic, so runners have the cliffs and the Pacific to themselves.
The first Big Sur marathon was held on the last Sunday of April 1986, with about 1,800 runners. Founder Bill Burleigh got the idea from a road sign on Highway 1 near Rio Road in Carmel, and the biggest challenge in the early years was getting a permit to close the highway. Slides have forced temporary course changes more than once, including in 2024.
Our poster follows the highway up the coast on a black map, with the Pacific in deep navy and the start and finish marked. The race date runs down the top right, and the Big Sur bridge icon, title and distance sit at the bottom left. Each poster is designed by hand after you order, with the runner's name, finish time and bib number added in the last line.
